A traditional Icelandic sweater that you can dress up, dress down, and is light enough to actually wear inside? Yes. Cue Farmers Market, founded in 2005 by designer Bergthora Gudnadottir and musician Joel Palsson, who have managed to marry traditional Nordic design with practicality and femininity. Inspired by their Icelandic heritage and a reverence for one of the most organic materials found in the world—Icelandic wool—the duo has managed to create a modern, chic twist on the traditional through their line of hand-knit sweaters and accessories. The goal? “To make sustainable pieces that you can always wear and will last for a long time,” says Gudnadottir, who learned to knit from her grandmother at age five, and makes all the prototypes herself.
The entire Farmers Market line is made from natural Icelandic wool, which is naturally water repellent, breathable, odor resistant and biodegradable. Also, because of the particular knit and the methods used in its finish, the wearer need not worry about any scratchiness—just be sure to handwash gently.
